McCain’s honor

October 28, 2008

Count me among those who lament the passing of McCain’s honor and reputation.  Many people have excused him, at least rhetorically, by expressing shock at the tactics of ‘his campaign’, or ‘his campaign staff’;  the idea being that someone so honorable could not himself be directly responsible for such filthy behavior.

The rhetorical question these people ask is this: how could someone who endured years of torture to preserve his honor now give it up?  Well, you can answer the question by inverting it and making it a statement:

Look at how corrupting power is, or not even power, just its promise: we have just watched it corrupt a man whom torture could not corrupt.

Which is depressing.
