National Humiliation

September 11, 2008

Did you know that the Chinese first attempted to put lipstick on a pig in 1273, well before the first Europeans?  Despite this fact and others, China feels humiliated and insecure on the international stage.  So much so that since 2001 legislators have been trying to establish a ‘National Humiliation Day’.  While the obvious need for such a day is widely understood, there is as yet no consensus on the day to be picked because there are so very, very many strong contenders.

This from an excellent article about Chinese resentment and ambition, originally published in the NYRB over the summer.  NPR did an interview with the author, Orville Schell.
